Are you a game changer?

There are times in the business world when an idea turns into a watershed moment. When something you decide to do leads to opportunities beyond your wildest imagination. I’ve been fortunate in my business career to have two of those ‘game changers.’

As a major wholesaler of prerecorded music, I was trying to think of what I could do to surpass my competition. Let’s face it. We were all selling prerecorded music. So how could I be different? That led me to the decision to carry every record in print. It forced me to compile a list of all those titles and I had to be committed to keeping that list current. I distributed that list to every record outlet in the world which meant that everyone who sold music now had a current list of every title. None of my competition was doing that. From that one idea and the will to implement it, I quickly became the largest wholesaler in the world of prerecorded music.

I knew a professor at the University of California at Santa Cruz who ran an “intranet” site at the university. He wanted to add that list to his site so university members order. My second ‘game changing’ moment was when I decided to engage in selling through his internal website. I remember wondering at the time if this was a ‘cute fad’ or would it turn into something bigger. To the best of my knowledge, I took the first order for music on the internet in 1989 before the World Wide Web existed.
